چکیده

INTRODUCTION Ischemic hypoxic brain injury often causes irreversible brain damage. The cascade of events leading to neuronal injury and death in ischemia includes the release of cytokines and free radicals, and induction of inflammation, apoptosis, and excitotoxicity. Reperfusion of ischemic areas could exacerbate ischemic brain damage through the generation of reactive oxygen species. The lack of effective and widely applicable pharmacological treatments for ischemic stroke patients may explain a growing interest in traditional medicines. Recently, from the point of view of “ selfmedication ” or “ preventive medicine,” several dietary supplements are used in the prevention of life-style related diseases including cerebral ischemia [2]. A silent stroke is a stroke that does not have any outward symptoms, and the patients are typically unaware they have suffered a stroke. Despite not causing identifiable symptoms, a silent stroke still causes damage to the brain, and places the patient at increased risk for both transient ischemic attack and major stroke in the future. Conversely, those who have suffered a major stroke are at risk of having silent strokes [3]. In a broad study in 1998 more than 11

Protective effect of α-terpineol against impairment of hippocampal synaptic plasticity and spatial memory following transient cerebral ischemia in rats

Objective(s): Cerebral ischemia is often associated with cognitive impairment. Oxidative stress has a crucial role in the memory deficit following ischemia/reperfusion injury. α-Terpineol is a monoterpenoid with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of α-terpineol against memory impairment following cerebral ischemia in rats. Materials a...

Long-term continuous administration of a hydro-ethanolic extract of Synedrella nodiflora (L) Gaertn in male Sprague-Dawley rats: biochemical, haematological and histopathological changes.

BACKGROUND Conflicting reports about the toxicity of Synedrella nodiflora (L) Gaertn (family Asteraceae), a plant traditionally used in Ghana for the management of epilepsy, abound in literature. The present study evaluates the effect of a 90-day continuous oral administration of a hydro-ethanolic whole plant extract of Synedrella nodiflora (SNE) in male Sprague-Dawley rats. METHODS The toxic...

The Effect of Pistacia vera L. Gum Extract on Oxidative Damage during Experimental Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion in Rats

Oxygen free radicals may be implicated in the pathogenesis of ischemia reperfusion damage. As the antioxidant effects of some species of Pistacia have been reported, the protective effects of Pistacia vera L. gum extract (0.1-0.5 g/kg) on oxidative damage following cerebral ischemia were studied in rats. Ischemia was induced using four-vessel occlusion model and evaluated using measurement of m...

Protective Effects of Enriched Environment Against Transient Cerebral Ischemia-Induced Impairment of Passive Avoidance Memory and Long-Term Potentiation in Rats

Introduction: Enriched Environment (EE), a complex novel environment, has been demonstrated to improve synaptic plasticity in both injured and intact animals. The present study investigated the capacity of an early environmental intervention to normalize the impairment of passive avoidance memory and Long-Term Potentiation (LTP) induced by transient bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (2-...

اثر محافظتی زعفران در مقابل آسیب‌های اکسیداتیو در ایسکمی مغزی موضعی- موقتی در موش صحرایی

Background: Numerous studies have shown the protective effects of saffron against oxidative damage in a global model of cerebral ischemia, but its effects on brain edema and oxidative ischemic injury in focal ischemic stroke are not completely understood. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effects of saffron on brain edema, infarct volume, antioxidant enzyme activity (glutath...
